The Think11 pitch report tool is a pre-match decision-support layer that scores every IPL 2026 fixture on five dimensions: surface behaviour (out of 12), pace carry and bounce (out of 10), spin grip and turn (out of 10), dew and weather impact (out of 10), and boundary dimensions adjusted for the venue (out of 8). The total is bucketed into one of four archetypes — Flat-Batter, Balanced, Slow-Turner, or Green-Seamer — and each archetype has a default XI template and a captain-pick preference. The point of the tool is not to predict the match outcome. It is to remove the "I picked my captain based on last match's form and forgot that the surface today is a turner" failure mode that costs active fantasy players the most money over a season.

What the tool is NOT. It is not a player-projection tool. It does not estimate each player's fantasy points. It does not adjust for opposition quality or recent form. The pitch report tool does one thing and does it well: it tells you what kind of match this surface wants you to build for. The captain pick follows from that, not the other way around.

How the data flows. Three hours before the toss, the BCCI publishes a pitch report for every IPL fixture. The report has the strip number, the curator's note on grass cover and moisture, and the morning outfield reading. The tool ingests that report, layers it on top of the venue's last 6 completed T20 matches (which includes IPL 2026 matches already played, IPL 2025 matches, and any domestic T20 matches played at the venue since January 2026), and produces the score. A venue whose first-innings average is 195+ reads as Flat-Batter; a venue whose average is 155-165 reads as Slow-Turner or Green-Seamer. The normalisation is critical because a 195 first-innings average at Wankhede (sea-level, dry, true bounce) is the same archetype as a 195 first-innings average at Dharamsala (altitude, smaller boundaries) but the captain pick at those two venues will differ because of the boundary-dimension factor (#5).

The third sub-metric is average spinner turn, measured in degrees of deviation. This is computed by Hawk-Eye data from the broadcaster, looking at the lateral deviation of stock off-spin and leg-spin deliveries across the first 12 overs of every match. A venue with 2.5+ degrees of average turn reads as spin-friendly (Chennai, Lucknow, Kolkata); a venue with under 1.5 degrees reads as flat (Mumbai, Hyderabad). The spinner-turn signal is what separates a Balanced archetype (180+ first-innings, balanced chase-win, 1.5-2.5 degrees of turn) from a Slow-Turner archetype (160-175 first-innings, low chase-win, 2.5+ degrees of turn). Pace carry and bounce is the second factor and it is the one that splits Balanced and Green-Seamer archetypes. The signal is straightforward: how much lateral movement do the quicks get in the first 6 overs, and how much steep bounce is on offer off a length. The tool computes this from the average speed-gun reading at the venue (a venue at altitude like Dharamsala reads 2-3 km/h higher than sea-level venues), the percentage of balls that beat the bat in the first 6 overs, and the bounce-steepness index from Hawk-Eye.

The pace factor matters most at three IPL 2026 venues: Mumbai (Wankhede, seamers get a bit of nip off the surface in the first 2 overs before it flattens), Bengaluru (Chinnaswamy, altitude + a slightly two-paced surface rewards high-arm seamers), and Mohali (PCA Stadium, traditionally seam-friendly in evening matches). Hardik Pandya at Mumbai, Andre Russell at the right Kolkata evening match, Sunil Narine at the right Kolkata morning match (yes, Narine is a spinner but his batting position makes him a death-overs hitter) are the archetype picks. The tool's captain suggestion at these venues is the all-rounder, not the top scorer of the last match.

4. Spin grip and turn — the factor that decides the Slow-Turner archetype (out of 10)

Spin grip is the third factor and the one that most fantasy players underweight. A venue where spinners take 3+ wickets in the powerplay (first 6 overs) at an economy under 7 is a Slow-Turner; the captain pick on these surfaces is a top-order batter who plays spin well, not a pace-anchor. Chepauk in Chennai is the canonical Slow-Turner. In IPL 2025, spinners at Chepauk took 28% of all wickets across the season and averaged 2.4 wickets per match at an economy of 6.8. The captain pick at Chepauk in 2025 was almost always a top-order anchor who could bat 16 overs of spin (Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shivam Dube when set, Devon Conway) — never a death-overs hitter whose value comes from pace bowling.

The spin-grip factor has three sub-metrics: average turn in degrees (covered above as part of surface behaviour), percentage of wickets taken by spinners, and the dot-ball percentage that spinners force in the middle overs (7-15). The third sub-metric is the most predictive of fantasy points: a spinner who bowls 4 overs in the middle phase and forces 8+ dots is a strong captain pick on a Slow-Turner surface because the dot-ball pressure builds the asking rate. Rashid Khan at Chepauk, Yuzvendra Chahal at most Balanced venues, and Varun Chakaravarthy at Kolkata night matches are the spin-captain archetypes the tool surfaces at Slow-Turner or spin-heavy Balanced venues.

The flip side: at venues where the spin factor scores under 4 out of 10 (Mumbai, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad), picking a spinner as captain is a fantasy-points leak. The death-overs pacers and the top-order boundary hitters dominate the fantasy points table at these venues. The tool explicitly downgrades spinners at these surfaces and shifts captain preference back to pace bowlers and top-order anchors. Dew is the most time-sensitive factor in the rubric. The dew factor is computed from humidity at the venue reading (taken at 6pm IST for an evening match), the temperature delta between day and evening (a 6+ degree delta at most IPL venues), and the venue's known dew pattern from prior seasons. Venues with reliable dew: Delhi, Lucknow, Mumbai night matches, Ahmedabad, and Kolkata night matches. Venues with low dew: Bengaluru afternoon matches, Dharamsala evening matches (the altitude keeps humidity low), Mohali evening matches, and Chennai night matches (the coastal humidity sometimes produces dew, sometimes doesn't).

The dew factor drives the second-innings captain-flip decision. The default captain pick is set 5 minutes before the toss based on the pitch score alone. Between the 9th and 11th overs of the second innings, the tool publishes a "live dew update" that re-scores the dew factor with the actual humidity at the venue (read from the broadcaster's on-site weather station). You can swap your captain and vice-captain assignments between the 9th and 11th overs of the second innings, before the lock window closes for the death overs. The flip is one-tap, the captain multiplier (2x) and vice-captain multiplier (1.5x) re-attach to the new picks automatically, and the original captain's points are recalculated at the standard 1x rate. The flip costs nothing in your team budget — the multiplier moves with the swap. If you don't flip, the original captain-pick scoring holds, even if the live dew update clearly signals a flip is the right call.

6. Boundary dimensions — the small-ground bonus that most players forget (out of 8)

Boundary dimensions are the smallest-weighted factor but they hit hardest at small grounds. The tool reads the straight boundary, the square boundary, and the overall boundary length average for the venue, and adjusts the captain pick toward boundary-hitters at small grounds and strike-rotators at large grounds. The venue-by-venue guide changes match-to-match within the same ground because of the strip rotation (covered in #8 below). The above is the season-average archetype; for the specific match you are building for, the morning pitch inspection will shift the venue toward one archetype or another. Mumbai Match 7 might be a Flat-Batter while Mumbai Match 39 might be a Balanced surface because the curator put out a different strip. The tool scores the specific match, not just the venue.

8. Why the same venue reads differently across two matches — strip rotation explained

Two matches at the same venue can produce different scores because the tool factors in the match-specific pitch used. IPL 2026 venues use 3-5 different pitches per ground across the season. The curator rotates the strips to manage wear and to keep the tournament from devolving into a flat-track batting competition. Wankhede used 5 different strips in IPL 2025; Chepauk used 4. The strip used for an India-Pakistan afternoon match behaves very differently from the strip used for a Mumbai-Bangalore evening match, even though both are at the same ground.

The tool pulls the specific strip from the BCCI pitch list (released the morning of the match, around 9am IST for an evening match) and adjusts the score for the strip's known history rather than just the venue's history. So Mumbai Match 7 and Mumbai Match 39 can read very different even though they are at the same ground. The strip list is not public in raw form, but the morning pitch inspection report (released 3 hours before the toss) names the strip number and the curator's note, and the tool maps that strip number to its historical behaviour in the dataset.

The practical takeaway: do not assume "this venue always plays this way." The morning pitch report changes the archetype sometimes by 2-3 points on the 50-point scale, which is enough to flip the captain-pick recommendation from a top-order anchor to a death-overs hitter. The most reliable workflow is to check the tool's score at 2 hours before the toss (after the morning inspection is published) and lock the XI 5 minutes before the toss.

9. The dew-flip decision tree — when to flip and when to hold

When to flip the captain based on dew. Flip if: dew probability above 70% AND the chasing side has 6+ wickets in hand at the 9-over mark AND your original captain is a top-order anchor who batted first. The flip target is a middle-order death-overs hitter (typically an off-side boundary hitter who will bat in the 16-20 phase with a wet ball). Hold if: dew probability below 30% OR the chasing side has already lost 4+ wickets OR your original captain is a death-overs hitter who will bat again. The hold scenario is more common than people think — at venues with low dew (Bengaluru afternoon, Mohali evening), the original captain pick almost always holds.

Why the dew flip is the highest-EV decision in the rubric. Across the 2025 IPL season, the dew-flip decision was the single highest-EV decision in the tool. Players who flipped correctly on 5+ occasions in the season finished in the top 10% of grand-league fantasy contests. Players who held their captain and ignored the dew signal finished in the bottom 30%. The expected-value math: a correct dew-flip adds about 12-18 fantasy points to your team's total, which is the equivalent of a half-century from your captain. An incorrect dew-flip costs you 0-4 points (because the original captain was a reasonable pick anyway). The asymmetry is what makes the flip the right call in close situations.

The flip has to be done between the 9th and 11th overs of the second innings, before the death-overs lock window closes. If you miss the window, the flip is not available. The tool sends a notification at the 9th over with the dew probability and the recommended flip target. If you have notifications muted, the in-app banner will show the dew update at the 9-over mark. The flip is one tap and does not require re-locking your XI.

10. Building your XI around the archetype in 7 steps

Step 1. Check the pitch score and archetype in the Think11 match-room 2 hours before the toss. The score and archetype are stable from 2 hours before toss through the end of the first innings. Step 2. Pick the captain from the archetype-recommended list. For Flat-Batter, top-order boundary hitter. For Balanced, opener anchor. For Slow-Turner, top-order anchor who plays spin well or spin-bowling all-rounder. For Green-Seamer, top-order anchor who survives the new ball. Step 3. Pick the vice-captain from the second-best option on the same list. Step 4. Fill the XI from the rest of the squad, prioritising role-balance over star-quality on archetype-mismatched surfaces.

Step 5. Check the toss-adjusted view after the toss. If the captain won the toss and elected to bat on a chase-friendly surface, slightly elevate chase-style batters. If the captain lost the toss and is chasing on a chase-friendly surface, hold the XI. Step 6. Watch the dew update between the 9th and 11th overs of the second innings. If dew probability is above 70% and the chasing side is well-set, flip the captain to a death-overs hitter. Step 7. After the match, log the pitch archetype and the captain pick in your personal tracker. The pattern across 10+ matches will show you which archetypes you pick well on and which you over-rate, which informs your future captain picks.

The 7-step flow is built into the Think11 team-builder UI as a guided wizard. Most consistent winners on Think11 follow the wizard 80%+ of the time and override only when they have a strong signal from opposition match-up or player form.

11. Common pitch-reading mistakes that lose fantasy points

Mistake 1: anchoring the captain pick on last match's form. Last match's form is a strong signal but it does not account for the surface. A batter who scored 80 on a Flat-Batter surface last match might score 25 on a Slow-Turner surface this match. The tool's surface score is what tells you whether last match's form is transferable to this match. Mistake 2: ignoring the toss. The toss-adjusted view is the second layer after the pitch score. A captain pick that is right for the pitch but wrong for the toss (a top-order anchor on a chase-friendly surface where the captain won the toss and batted first) loses 8-12 fantasy points on average. The flip is one tap; do not skip it.

Mistake 3: chasing recent player news over surface reading. A high-profile batter returning from injury is a strong signal, but not stronger than the surface. The most common error is to captain a returning star on a surface that does not suit them. The right move is to keep them in the XI but downgrade them from captain to a regular pick, and captain someone whose surface-match is stronger. Mistake 4: not logging your picks. The personal tracker is the single highest-leverage habit in fantasy cricket. After 20-30 logged picks, the pattern will show you which archetypes you pick well on and which you over-rate. Without logging, you cannot learn from your mistakes and your win-rate plateaus.

12. Pitch-reading for non-IPL domestic T20s — what changes

The tool's primary dataset is the last 6 completed T20s at the venue regardless of competition, so it picks up Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, T20 Blast, and Big Bash matches played at shared venues. However, the morning pitch inspection data is only available for IPL and select international fixtures where the BCCI or the home board publishes a pitch report 3 hours before the toss. The confidence flag means you should treat the score as a directional signal, not a precise prediction. For high-stakes fantasy decisions on domestic T20s, the recommended add-on is a 30-minute YouTube pitch-walk from the home broadcaster, posted the morning of the match. The pitch-walk gives you a curator-level read on grass cover, moisture, and roll-on speed that the tool's historical dataset cannot replicate.

For international T20s at non-IPL venues (T20 World Cup 2026 matches at the West Indies and USA venues, for example), the tool relies entirely on historical data without morning inspection, and the confidence flag is always yellow. The captain pick still follows the archetype, but the live dew-flip is not available because the broadcaster weather data is not piped into the tool for non-IPL fixtures. 13. Responsible use — the tool is a decision support, not a guarantee

The pitch report tool is a decision-support framework, not a prediction engine. The captain-pick recommendation is the highest-EV pick given the surface reading, but it does not guarantee fantasy-point outcomes. A 70/30 favourite captain pick still loses 30% of the time. The right framing is that the tool improves your long-term win rate by 8-12% across a season — a meaningful edge, but not a guarantee of any individual match.

Use the tool as one input among several. The other inputs are: recent player form (last 4-5 matches), opposition match-up (how the player has performed against the specific opposition), injury news (covered in the news hub), and your own read from watching the toss and the first few overs. The 4-input decision is what separates consistent winners from one-off winners. The pitch score is the foundation, the dew flip is the time-sensitive lever, and the opposition match-up is the tiebreaker when the pitch score is close between two candidates.

Think11's responsible play settings also apply to the tool. You can set a per-week contest-entry cap, a per-week deposit limit, and a self-exclusion window in the Profile menu. The settings take effect immediately and can only be relaxed after a 7-day cooling-off period.
